The surprising truth about Israel’s population and how Jews worldwide are attached to it

How 'small' is Israel, really? In this recent Global Insights conversation, JPR Senior Research Fellow, Dr Daniel Staetsky, challenges one of the most enduring assumptions about Israel: that it remains a demographically tiny state. While geographically small, Israel’s population now exceeds 10 million - already larger than countries such as Austria, Switzerland and Denmark - placing it firmly among the medium-sized states of both Europe and the Middle East.
And Israel is still growing. Driven primarily by high fertility rates across almost all parts of Israeli society - alongside low mortality and continued migration - its population is projected to reach around 17 million by 2055. At a time when much of Europe is shrinking, what does Israel’s demographic growth mean for its future and for how Jews around the world understand its place in Jewish life?
