Biography

Matthias J. Becker is a linguist and discourse analyst specialising in antisemitism, hate speech, and online radicalisation. He leads the international research project Decoding Antisemitism (University of Cambridge), which pioneers the analysis of implicit and coded antisemitic communication in social media by combining qualitative discourse research with AI-based tools.

His work goes beyond antisemitism to examine how hate, conspiracy narratives, and anti-democratic ideologies circulate in both fringe and mainstream online discourse. Drawing on comparative case studies across Germany, the UK, the US, and France, he has developed innovative methods to uncover subtle radicalisation dynamics in digital environments.

He earned his doctorate from Technische Universität Berlin with a study of antisemitic discourse in British and German media (Palgrave Macmillan) and has held fellowships in Berlin, London, Jerusalem, and Haifa. He advises governments, civil society actors, and tech companies internationally. Currently, he serves as Senior Researcher with the NYC-based think tank AddressHate, where he works with New York University to bridge social media studies, hate studies, and technology.
