The total population of Latvia on 1 January 2016 stood at 1,959,000. Its population declined by 17,100 in 2015, of which 10,600 was due to outward migration.
As of 1 January 2016, the core Jewish population of Latvia was estimated to be 5000 (0.26% of the wider population), and the enlarged Jewish population was estimated at 12,000 (0.61 % of the wider population).
The core Jewish population was estimated to be 18,000 in 1990 (0.59% of the wider population), and has therefore declined by approximately 71% over 25 years during which the wider population declined by approximately 25%.
Between 1990 and 2015, 11,379 Latvians emigrated to Israel.
An estimated 16,000 Latvians qualify for Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return.
