The total population of Hungary on 1 January 2016 stood at 9,830,500. Its population declined by 25,100 in 2015.
As of 1 January 2016, the core Jewish population of Hungary was estimated to be 47,600 (0.49% of the wider population), and the enlarged Jewish population was estimated at 100,000 (1.01% of the wider population).
The core Jewish population was estimated to be 57,000 in 1990. Population numbers have therefore declined by 16% between 1990 and 2015, in a period in which the wider population declined by 6%.
Between 1990 and 2015, 3,470 Hungarians have emigrated to Israel.
An estimated 130,000 Hungarian citizens qualify for Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return.
The overwhelming majority of Hungarian Jews live in Budapest.
