The continuity/innovation polarity

The continuity/innovation polarity

As part of JPR's Community Futures initiative, Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand, Executive Director of JHub, investigated the tension between communal continuity and social entrepreneurship.

She argued that a healthy community needs to focus on the positive sides of both elements, seeking to provide a sense of stability and familiarity, while simultaneously allowing innovation and creativity to occur. Any attempt to resolve the tension one way or another - i.e. by holding fast to longstanding modes of community life or throwing them out in search of the new and different - will inevitably leave the community with the downside of each of these: boredom and stagnation, or rootlessness and capriciousness.
